Explore the cinematic beauty of the Alps by rail, including a trip to the highest railway station in Europe and a nostalgic ride on a steam train

Switzerland's jagged, snowy peaks and extraordinary turquoise lakes deep in the Alps are a wonderland of dramatic vistas. Spend a week in the Swiss Bernese Oberland region to encounter the looming peaks of Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau, and visit observatories with views of neighbouring countries, far-off mountain ranges and forests, vast glaciers, and distant lakes.

You'll be based in car-free Wengen, an Alpine village on a mountainside that can only be reached by train. A cosy hotel, Hotel Falken, will serve delicious meals every evening after you return from your adventures, including a Swiss staple - gooey fondue - and send you off each day with a delicious packed lunch.

During your time in Switzerland, you'll use mountain railways, funiculars, and cableways to explore this phenomenal landscape. First, you'll ascend the Schynige Platte, where you'll see the three most impressive peaks of the region. Onboard the Brienz Rothorn Bahn steam-powered cogwheel railway, there are almost 700 peaks visible from the route. And then there's the world-famous Jungfraujoch, an unforgettably scenic railway journey to a station within the mountain, curling past spruce forests and mountains swathed in pearl white snow. At the top is one of the world's highest astronomical observatories with views of the Aletsch Glacier, the longest glacier in the Alps.

The two final journeys are memorable in their own right. Harder Kulm funicular railway, a stunningly steep ascent, takes only eight minutes to reach a glorious viewpoint over Interlaken. And on your last day, a climb up Schilthorn mountain by a 32-minute aerial cableway leads to the ultimate view of the Swiss skyline and a James Bond-themed brunch in a revolving restaurant, made famous from its appearance in the movie, On Her Majesty's Secret Service.
