WHAT WE LOVE...

Twr y Felin is set conveniently on the outskirts of the miniature city of St Davids. The hotel has an interesting history. At its core stands a windmill dating from 1806 (Twr y Felin means Mill Tower in Welsh), and in previous guises the property served as a temperance hotel and a base for GCHQ in the Second World War. It is now a unique, rather snazzy and ultra-modern place to stay. While no great beauty from the outside, it's stuffed full of of large and eye-catching works of contemporary art inside, most of which were inspired by the wonderful local scenery. The food - Welsh with modern twists - is equally creative, while the very comfy bedrooms have a masculine look to them.

Style & Character

Couples who are open-minded art lovers and are after memorable foodie experiences and a very comfy, minimalist-styled bedroom will love it here. The vast, vaulted lounge feels like an art gallery, and there's even a booklet to browse on the hotel's art collection.

Service & Facilities

We really enjoy the proud Welshness of the operation - from staff to food to art, which includes unusual portraits of the country's most famous actors.

Rooms

Our favourite room is the the circular, three-storey Tyddewi Windmill Tower Suite, with its fantastic, 360-degree views. Some rooms - the Oriel Spacious ones on the ground floor - come with private terraces overlooking a field and, in the distance, St Brides Bay.

Food & Drink

We love the breakfast. Cooked options include porridge with local honey and a full Welsh breakfast with laverbread (edible seaweed). There's no buffet under Covid rules. It's hard to pick just a single favourite dish from the main menu, but our starter of a scallop with apple- and elderflower-flavoured foam is memorable.

Blas Restaurant: seasonal, elegant contemporary dishes, Welsh-inspired cuisine, local produce, light lunches. Open daily for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner and drinks. Mains from £14.
