This 17th Century countryside retreat, set within 30,000 acres of rambling nature and with spectacular views of the famed Yorkshire Dales in which it stands, offers an ideal getaway for anyone with a canine friend who likes to walk and return to luxury. Foodies will be impressed with the fine dining offering and it's ideal for a pampering weekend away with friends, a romantic partner or alone, immersed in the healing picturesque views, making use of the spa's private bell tents outside. The staff are welcoming as is the countryside-chic interior with roaring fireplaces, plush comfortable sofas to sink into and attractive paintings to look at; if it's summer you can stroll around the Italian Box Garden listening to birdsong as you soak up the rays.
York is home to the creation of the Kit Kat and more, we really enjoyed a chocolate themed history tour with 'York's Chocolate Story' .
The hotel is beside the Yorkshire Dales on Bolton Abbery Estate; York is around an hour's drive away.
By car: the hotel is one hour from Leeds, 1 hour 30 mins from Manchester and 4 hours 45 mins from London. There's free on-site parking.

Dog lovers will feel welcomed, from doggy-themed décor to the ample dog friendly areas not to mention the Dales on the doorstep. We loved the manicured courtyard with topiary forming a pretty pattern to look out on, a contrast to the rambling Dales just beyond.
The hotel is incredibly accessible for a wheelchair, even though it's old; corridors are spacious and the staff thoughtfully reserved the perfect dinner table to accommodate us, making us all feel welcome. Dogs will be treated to a comfy bed, with four poster dog beds available for an additional £25.00 per night, a bowl and treats, not to mention acres of the Dales to play in.

The Shepard Room has warm, stately home vibes with a wooden four-poster bed, quaint dressing table, freestanding wardrobe and pretty fireplace. We loved the table and comfortable chairs to sit at in our room whilst looking out to incredible views over the courtyard and Dales.

We loved the cheese board - pear juice, plum tea-bread, lavosh crackers, truffle and honey jelly and artisan cheeses from the esteemed Courtyard Dairy in Settle. The flavoursome salt-aged Yorkshire mutton loin paired incredibly well with the elements of turnip and punchy salsa verde punctuated by salty anchovy.
