WHAT WE LOVE...

This bright and funky well-priced hotel is a welcome addition to the established Scarborough seaside holiday scene. It may be housed in a classic stucco Victorian terrace overlooking South Bay, but interiors are bold and colourful with a youthful vibe. And there's a strong emphasis on catering for outdoorsy types - boot-room, dog-wash, and storage for bikes and surfboards. Furnishings are bright, colourful and fuss-free with jolly striped blinds, colour-blocked walls and plenty of cycling or seaside paraphernalia as the oddball decorations. Well-designed bedrooms have a light, Scandi feel and around half have sea views. A long bar-cum-bistro, with filling comfort food, overlooks the sea while a cosier lounge offers free hot drinks and cake. There's also a (free) cinema room for damp days or nights in, and it's family- as well as dog-friendly, too.

Style & Character

Young and young-at-heart people, plus families and anyone who has a love of the outdoors will love it here. It's fun spotting the cycling and seaside paraphernalia used as decorations: a clock with flip-flops for the numerals, and lampshades made out of old fish-boxes.

Service & Facilities

If you time it right, there's free cake on offer daily in The Retreat, and always complimentary hot drinks.

  • Bar

Rooms

We recommend the front-facing sea view rooms or, failing that, upper-floor rooms at the rear with their fun lookout over the rooftops. We loved the window blinds, printed with a vintage advertising poster for Scarborough's attractions. The evocative photographs of the town add colour and a real sense of place.

Boot Room, Small Room, Medium Room, Large Room, Loft Mini-Suite, Suite
Facilities include: ensuite bathroom with toiletries, hairdryer, espresso machine, iron and ironing board, TV, free Wi-Fi

Food & Drink

It's worth asking the barman for recommendations - they know their stuff, and can also mix you a mean cocktail. Pizzas are freshly made to order and come in two sizes so if you are undecided - or hungry - you could order two smaller ones.

Bareca: bar and restaurant, sea views. Small plates, grills and pizza. All-day menu, open daily.
