Raithwaite, Sandsend, North Yorkshire
WHAT WE LOVE...
Tucked in a wooded ravine just off the road that skirts the long stretch of sand between Whitby and Sandsend, Raithwaite feels secluded yet is within minutes of beach strolls. Not surprisingly, it's a particular favourite with dog-owners. Although built around a Victorian hall, the hotel is almost entirely 21st-century, though constructed of local stone and designed in traditional style. There are a couple of newer brick-built additions, including a faux-battlemented block which sits rather oddly but is liked by families. Interiors are smoothly contemporary, the best rooms having views over the 85 acres of gardens and woodland - great for easy walks, or you can chill around the pool or in the small spa. Food is surprisingly creative, with many ingredients sourced from the extensive kitchen gardens and orchard, while service throughout is genuinely warm and friendly.

Location
Drive five minutes to Whitby and its dramatic ruined abbey on the clifftop (the setting for part of Bram Stoker's 'Dracula'), fishing harbour and fresh fish and chips - Magpie Café is a favourite.
Enjoy scenic walks around the North York Moors, or visit the seaside resort of Whitby - both a short drive away.
By car: under 2 hours from Leeds, 3 hours from Manchester and 5 hours from London. Free parking on-site.
By train: London Kings Cross to Whitby takes 5 hours. The station is a 7-minute walk from the hotel. thetrainline.com
Style & Character
Couples and families who want a country-house hotel close to the beach but without the busyness of being in a seaside resort will love it here. Rooms have plenty of light through large sash windows while the bar and restaurant have French doors leading out to terraces.
Service & Facilities
We loved the tour of the kitchen gardens (just ask one of the gardeners) with the original orchard, a newly planted Forest Garden and bountiful 'no-dig' kitchen garden.

While Comfy Rooms tend to have the best garden views, plus balconies, Cosy Rooms are dog-friendly and in the cottage extension. The organic coffee is roasted locally, and the pouches are recyclable, plus the biscuits are baked fresh in the kitchens.

Food & Drink
Dishes have commendable local sourcing with up to half of the fruit and vegetables grown on-site including asparagus, fennel, apples, plums and figs. Breakfast is nicely unhurried with hot dishes including smashed peas on toast with chilli salsa and poached eggs, and local Whitby kippers, as well as the full Yorkshire (with vegan option).
The Restaurant: brasserie cuisine, seasonal menus, locally sourced produce. All-day menu, open daily.
Bar 1882: chic bar, garden views. Afternoon tea served daily. Open for lunch and dinner.
