WHAT WE LOVE...

An excellent entry in the Hotel du Vin portfolio, the Newcastle hotel and bistro combines a glorious Edwardian-era building and quayside setting with the chain's trademark style - dark woods, rich leather, and warm earth tones. The hotel offers a quiet, luxurious stay away from the nightly noise and bustle of the city centre. Though that does mean you're further from the historic city's main attractions, there's still plenty to enjoy nearby, from strolls along the Tyne to exploring the trendy Ouseburn neighbourhood and popping over the iconic Millennium Bridge to take in contemporary art exhibitions at the BALTIC. Or you could simply enjoy the luxuries of the hotel itself. Enjoy French-influenced cuisine in the laidback bistro, then relax in the bar, cosy lounge, or heated outdoor cigar shack.

Style & Character

It's ideal for couples, friends and even business travellers. It's also popular for wedding parties, with Penfolds a favourite room for brides to get ready. The use of dark woods and leather adds to the overall ambience, in a way that will only improve as the carefully chosen pieces age.

Rooms

The Mouton-Rothschild Bridge View Suite, with its floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the River Tyne and its roomy mezzanine level, is the showstopper. Among the Deluxe rooms, Pol Roger stands out for its extra feeling of privacy - guests have their own entrance directly from the street. Rooms in the main building incorporate its original features, such as exposed brickwork and fireplaces, but even in the newer blocks each room is unique and thoughtfully designed.

Food & Drink

Given the hotel's name, it's no surprise that the wine is excellent. Ask for recommended pairings with your meal, or book in a wine tasting (£25) - and don't miss the surprising oaked Chardonnay. Avoiding alcohol doesn't mean you'll feel left out though, with several enticing mocktails on the menu. Try the indulgent Fluère pina colada…

Bistro du Vin: classic French dishes, afternoon tea. Open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Mains from £12.
Bar du Vin: extensive wine list, signature cocktails, cigar menu, light bites. Mains from £8.50.
