Forest Lodge Hotel, Lyndhurst, New Forest
A relaxed, friendly hotel with indoor swimming pool just a few minutes' walk from Lyndhurst, the "capital" of the New Forest. What was once a Georgian town house has been extended to over the years but some of the period charm remains, with a fireplace in the drawing room and a large chandelier in the breakfast room. Try one of their popular afternoon teas on the terrace or bag a sofa in the cellar to watch the football. The indoor pool is a good size and well heated with a mural of the forest to brighten the walls.
We love being able to pop to the shops and be back in the room within 15 minutes.
Just a five-minute stroll into the centre of Lyndhurst with boutique shops and bars, this is a great location for exploring the New Forest.
By car: 25 minutes from Southampton, 33 minutes from Bournemouth and 2 hours from Bristol. Free parking is available at the hotel.
By train: Brockenhurst, Beaulieu Road and Ashurst New Forest stations are a 10-minute drive away, with trains from Bournemouth (30 mins) and Southampton Central (10 mins). thetrainline.com
