WHAT WE LOVE...
Set in an 18th-century Georgian property, this welcoming hotel is conveniently located at the top of Richmond Hill, across the road from verdant Richmond Park. It's part of Harbour Hotels, who own a collection of mostly coastal properties around the country. You may be far from the beach here, but it oozes a subtle coastal vibe, with bright, airy interiors with striped fabrics, lively pops of colour and a heavy dose of greenery throughout. There's a well-equipped spa complete with swimming pool, sauna, steam room, gym and spin studios, and an airy restaurant serving modern British dishes. It's the perfect place to bed down if you're after a comfy hotel with great facilities that won't break the bank, all a skip and a hop away from London's largest Royal Park.

We love the fact that the hotel is surrounded by greenery. You could easily spend the day exploring the area without barely seeing a car.
The hotel is on top of Richmond Hill, with Richmond Park across the road.
By car: the hotel is 4 hours from Manchester, 2 hours 30 mins from Bath and 1 hour 30 mins from Southampton. Paid on-site parking available.
By train: London Waterloo to Richmond takes 20 minutes. The hotel is a 10-minute drive from the station. thetrainline.com

The atmosphere and décor is busy, fun and eclectic - think textile art on the walls, wicker chairs, nut-brown leather armchairs and hanging potted plants. There's also a lovely outdoor patio shaded by a huge magnolia tree. The rib-eye steak is particularly good. Rich and juicy, it melts in the mouth.
The Gate: modern British dishes, all-day dining and afternoon tea. Mains include pork chop with sage mash and monkfish tail with wilted spinach. Open daily. Dishes from £14.
