The Haweswater Hotel, Bampton, Lake District
WHAT WE LOVE...
In the quieter east of the Lake District, overlooking one of the least-visited lakes, Haweswater, this eponymously named hotel offers a quiet retreat for walkers, nature-lovers and architecture enthusiasts. Built in 1937 when the valley was flooded to create the reservoir, it's the only building along the lakeshore and a superb example of Art Deco/Modernist style. Original features have been restored while rooms are styled with furniture and fittings of the period: fireplaces, armchairs, bureaux, lampshades, plus striking advertising posters. Most bedrooms and all the main rooms overlook the lake, including the dining room which serves quietly classy food. There are gentle lake walks and tougher fell walks, and warming fires or terraced gardens to which to return.

Location
Setting off from the lake car park and up on to Harter Fell without meeting a soul, and enjoying spectacular views, was pure joy.
Located in the heart of the Lake District National Park, there are plenty of walks to be enjoyed. Brougham Castle is 25 minutes' drive away.
By car: around 2 hours from Manchester, 3 hours 30 minutes from Birmingham and 5 hours 30 minutes from London. Free parking on-site.
By train: direct trains to Penrith Station from Glasgow Central (1 hour 30 minutes) and London Euston (3 hours). The hotel is a 30-minute drive. thetrainline.com
Style & Character
Outdoorsy types, nature-lovers, those who enjoy 1930s design and anyone wanting a place to recharge will appreciate this hotel. We loved the attention to detail, from the genuine 1930s fireplaces and geometric-patterned linoleum to the period advertising posters and wind-up gramophone.

Attic rooms are cosy with exposed beams while the balcony rooms are a top spot for sunset views across the lake. The majority of rooms face the lake, and it's a treat to wake up to those views from the comfort of your bed.

Food & Drink
The dining room is prettily lit with twinkling lights, and the 1930s music in the background sets just the right tone. There's no better way to kick off a day's walking than the creamy porridge, followed by a full cooked breakfast - with both vegan and vegetarian options available.
The Restaurant: Art-Deco brasserie, modern British cuisine. Mains include Gigha turbot and rack of lamb. Open daily for breakfast and dinner.
Lounge & Bar: casual dining and cosy bar, serving light bites. Open daily for lunch and dinner.
