Four of our favourites:

There are few more idyllic locations for a hotel than this: nestled in the Chilterns, in the heart of the 12th century market town and a stone's throw from the banks of the River Thames. The hotel is a reincarnation of a 300-year-old brewery, successfully blending Georgian period detail with stylish contemporary furnishings. Drinks and alfresco meals in the courtyard are a highlight, as are the walks, boutiques and boating experiences available on your doorstep.

The very first property in the Hotel du Vin chain, this red-brick townhouse hotel epitomises all that is good about this witty, wine-loving brand. Situated just a stone's throw from the High Street, it nevertheless provides sanctuary with a pretty walled courtyard garden and even it's own small car park. Enjoy large period rooms with sumptuous styling and L'Occitane toiletries, Nespresso machines and soft fluffy robes. Sip an al fresco aperitif surrounded by fairy lights before dining in Gallic style with bowls of French onion soup or moules frites in the bistro.

Bristol, Avon Gorge

With arguably the best location in Bristol, Avon Gorge by Hotel du Vin offers a grandstand view of Isambard Kingdom Brunel's magnificent Clifton Suspension Bridge, which soars above the River Avon. It's also close to "villagey" Clifton, the city's most attractive quarter. Taking the best of a Grade II-listed building, the makeover has also introduced some lovely contemporary touches, such as the glass-walled restaurant, which is known for its steaks, and some witty decorative features.

Just outside the city walls, on the road to the racecourse, York's Hotel du Vin displays all the characteristics loyal fans have come to expect of the HdV group: a period building repurposed as a hotel with strong colours, plenty of leather armchairs and dark-wood floors, snug bar areas, a buzzing bistro-style restaurant and, of course, an excellent wine cellar. And, in the summer, a courtyard for al fresco dining. The hotel makes for a buzzy stay if you don't mind being out of the centre.
