WHAT WE LOVE...

Munich-headquartered Motel One Group has 80 properties across Europe, with more to come, and they've struck gold with these affordable design hotels decked out in signature turquoise. Opened in 2007, this is one of ten locations in the German capital. Most guests come for a night or two - business travellers during the week, leisure at weekends - and they appreciate its simple rooms, spacious ground floor lounge and super-central location. While not the quietest or prettiest of areas, Hackescher Markt is totally Berlin with plenty of bars, restaurants and nightlife to discover plus historic sights around what was once the epicentre of East Berlin. After a satisfying day exploring, it's a pleasure to return to a reasonably priced hotel with good looks and helpful staff.

In the central Mitte district, Alexanderplatz is a short walk away; popular with tourists, it's a great area for shopping and not far from Brandenburg Gate and other popular sights.
By plane: direct flights to Berlin Brandenburg from London (1 hour 40 minutes), Manchester (1 hour 55 minutes) and Edinburgh (2 hours 5 minutes). It's a 45-minute drive to the hotel. Parking costs €18 per day. skyscanner.net
