WHAT WE LOVE...

Home and studio of early photography pioneers Robert Adamson and David Octavius Hill, this fascinating house (said to be one of the oldest in the city) with separate annexe and belvedere studio is set in a commanding yet secluded city-centre position near the foot of Calton Hill. Imaginatively restored and skilfully styled it is an attractive take on high-Victorian meets uncluttered contemporary. The flexible space makes it perfect for friends or extended families, with sufficient privacy, whether in a group or separately renting the apartment or studio. There's a garden, courtyard and terrace, but the unique location means parking away from the house with access involving steps, so it's not suitable for those with limited mobility.

Style & Character

Families, friends or couples who are looking for a quiet place of retreat, but want the city on their doorstep should stay here. We love the way the house captures the changing light, no matter the weather or time of year - it's a house for all seasons.

Although the house is utterly charming, the views - available from every window, front and back - are priceless.

Rooms

We love the bedroom with the traditional box bed (complete with reading light) and Morris wallpaper. The design of the Photographer's Studio, with its hexagonal sitting room and hidden kitchen, is genius.

Food & Drink

Rock House is self-catering, and the kitchen is well-stocked with an AGA oven and plenty of cooking equipment. The property is also close to the wide range of excellent bars and restaurants in Edinburgh city centre.
