The Priory, Wareham, Dorset
A deservedly popular boutique hotel in an enviable riverside location. The former monastery building creates a memorable first impression and the accommodation, stylishly furnished with antiques, doesn't disappoint. Outside, a lovingly tendered lawn leads down to the banks of the River Frome. The hotel is close to the centre of Wareham, a bustling market town with plenty of independent shops. It's also the gateway to the Isle of Purbeck - a peninsula lined with sandy beaches and towering white cliffs overlooking Poole Harbour. While the hotel may not be by the seaside, it has the advantage of offering a peaceful retreat from the crowds during summer. Don't miss the magnificent ruins of Corfe Castle, a ten-minute drive from the hotel.
A mesmerising steam train journey from Corfe Castle takes you through the Purbeck Peninsula to the coast at Swanage.
Wareham is a pretty riverside town; Bournemouth is only 30-minutes away to the east, while Weymouth is the same distance to the west.
By car: over 3 hours from London, 2 hours 30 minutes from Bristol and 4 hours from Birmingham. Free parking available.
By train: trains from London Waterloo to Wareham take over 2 hours. The hotel is 15 minutes' walk. thetrainline.com
