WHAT WE LOVE...

With bags of style and history, this charming boutique hotel is well located on a quiet side street in famously pretty Burford, seemingly a world away from the crowds that descend on the busy high street. With its gables and mullion windows, the main building is a handsome 17th-century townhouse which stands on the site of a property that belonged to Lawrence Tanfield, James I's Baron of the Exchequer. There's a clever balance of ancient and modern here: big fireplaces, exposed-stone walls and flagstone floors resonate with the Bay Tree's past while more recent additions include a spacious, conservatory-style extension that houses the restaurant. Squishy sofas and armchairs to curl up in contribute to a relaxing vibe while wonderful sketches and paintings on the walls add arty panache.

THE DETAILS

Location

We loved the creaky old George Antiques store on the high street: the stalls inside are brilliant for browsing and the building itself exudes history - it dates from the 1400s and for centuries was an important coaching inn.

Burford is a pretty town, considered the 'Gatesway to the Cotswolds'. Visit a tearoom, antique shop or visit The Tolsey Museum.
By car: around 2 hours from London and 1 hour 15 minutes from Bristol. Free parking available.
By train: there are direct trains to Kingham from Oxford (25 minutes) and London Paddington (1 hour 30 minutes). The hotel is a 15-minute drive. thetrainline.com
