WHAT WE LOVE...

Set in a 14th-century coaching inn, The Lygon Arms oozes history: Oliver Cromwell stayed here the night before the Battle of Worcester in 1651 and King Charles I met with his supporters in what is today the King Charles I Suite. The welcoming, dimly lit interiors feature a warren of snug rooms with wood panelled walls and puffy sofas, with creaky floorboards and wonky staircases leading up to some of the rooms. Original Tudor features have been preserved, including wrought-iron doors, ceiling beams, huge fireplaces, and gorgeous flagstone flooring. Pooches are made a complete fuss of, with grooming services, dog menus and a muddy paws station to wash down four-legged friends. There's a delightful spa with swimming pool, steam room and saunas, and a bustling restaurant serving contemporary British cuisine.
